Notes on an Editorial.
Folen Quarterly was established in 2018 as an independent record of the relationship between food and weight — two subjects that generate substantial public interest but uneven editorial scrutiny. The publication occupies the gap between popular nutrition commentary and peer-reviewed research, translating the latter for a readership that expects accuracy without jargon.
The Publication's Starting Point
The founding observation of Folen Quarterly was a discrepancy: the volume of public attention directed at food and weight as subjects bears little relationship to the quality of information available about them. Nutritional advice is widely distributed but frequently unreliable. Research findings are often reported selectively, stripped of the caveats that give them meaning. The publication was established to do something simpler — to read the research carefully and report what it actually says.
The editorial team is based at the publication's office at 44 Ray Streetory as a home to small independent publishing activities. The location is practical rather than symbolic, but the working environment — a converted Georgian terrace with north-facing windows and a shared courtyard — shapes the pace at which the publication operates. Quarterly means what it says.
The publication does not accept advertising and is not commercially affiliated with any food, nutrition, or wellness brand. Editorial decisions are made on the basis of whether a subject is worth examining and whether the research record on it is sufficient to support a considered article. Both conditions must be met. This has occasionally meant declining to cover popular topics where the evidence base does not yet support sustained editorial engagement.

The Editorial Team
Eleanor Whitfield
Eleanor has led the editorial direction of Folen Quarterly since its founding, overseeing the publication's coverage of energy balance, eating patterns, and food quality research. Her background is in nutritional epidemiology communication, and she writes primarily for a lay readership that brings critical intelligence to the subject.
Jasper Marsden
Jasper covers the nutrition science side of the publication's output — satiety research, nutrient function, and the translation of appetite studies into editorial content. He joined the publication in 2020 and has contributed more than sixty articles across the satiety and nutrient density subject areas.
Harriet Linwood
Harriet brings a food systems perspective to the publication, examining the wider environmental, social, and economic context of dietary patterns. She contributes as a guest writer on a regular basis, focusing particularly on plant-based eating patterns, food processing research, and dietary guidelines analysis.
How the Publication Works
Every article published by Folen Quarterly begins with the published research record. Contributors identify a question or a subject area where the evidence is sufficiently developed to support a substantive editorial approaches, locate the relevant cohort studies, meta-analyses, or longitudinal datasets, and read them fully before writing. Summary abstracts are not used as a basis for editorial work.
The writing process involves a first draft by the contributing author, a review pass by at least one other editor, and a final check against the original research sources before publication. Corrections to published articles are noted publicly, with the original text preserved and the correction clearly identified. This process is described in full on the methodology page.
The publication does not use generative AI tools in the writing or editing process. All editorial content is written by the named human contributors whose biographies appear on this page. This position is maintained as a matter of editorial principle, not technological caution.
Editorial Principles
Independence
The publication accepts no advertising revenue, sponsored content, or commercial partnerships. Editorial selection is governed solely by the research record and the contributors' independent assessment of what is worth examining.
Accuracy
All factual claims in published articles are traceable to the original research source. Contributors are required to link to or cite the studies they reference. The publication corrects errors publicly when they are identified.
Proportionality
The publication does not report preliminary findings with the same weight as established cohort evidence. The scale of certainty in an article reflects the scale of certainty in the underlying research. Single studies are contextualised, not amplified.
Transparency
Contributors disclose any commercial or institutional relationships that could influence their selection of subject matter. The publication's editorial methodology is publicly documented and updated when processes change.
Caution
The publication avoids the editorialisation of nutritional research into prescriptive guidance. Readers are presented with what the evidence observes, not told what to do in response to it. Personal dietary decisions are the reader's own to make.
Durability
The publication prioritises subjects where the evidence record is established over several years. Emerging trends and novel dietary approaches receive coverage only when a sufficient body of research exists to support considered editorial engagement rather than speculative commentary.
Reach the Editorial Team
The publication welcomes correspondence from researchers, readers, and potential contributors. All enquiries are handled by the editorial team directly.
